Night Windows is a self-initiated project inspired by the concept of the “flâneur”, drawing from my observations of real windows on streets during daily life. Influenced by Franz Kafka’s writing, the project explores themes of loneliness, alienation, and the sense of belonging in the modern city.  The images were first made in charcoal and conte crayon, later turned into soft ground etching prints.

In the UK, houses are often close to the street, with windows acting as bridges between the inside and outside worlds. They show glimpses of others’ lives: plants, small sculptures, decorations, and sometimes a cat resting or staring outside. At night, windows have a different, mysterious atmosphere. When people return home, warm yellow light glows from inside the houses, bringing comfort to the dark streets. The objects by the windows become dark silhouettes, like scenes from the shadow puppet theatre. Walking alone at night, these windows can feel like quiet companions. However, in today’s tough worldwide economy, people are under huge pressure, with high living costs and unaffordable house prices. For many people, owning a home feels like an unachievable dream. The project reflects on these contrasts: light and darkness, warmth and isolation, comfort and longing, through the night windows. Charcoal and conte crayon on paper
